Maria’s Mexicatessen started in 1994 in George & Maria’s one room apartment. It began as a game where Maria would challenge George with limited ingredients to make a meal. Although George was a former chef at Le Creuset, New York, he was up for working with just a hotplate and a counter. He excelled in this game and made Maria very happy.
George & Maria’s thought that maybe others would enjoy their simple, but delicious dishes. Although his specialty was French cuisine, he creatively used his training to establish the menu for Maria’s. The restaurant was to become his life’s work. George worked night and day to establish the restaurant. He gave up his dream of becoming a rock musician to make Maria’s a success. Maria saw his commitment and worked along side him. Their dream was to share their delicious food with the community.
The restaurant was not an instant success. George had to call on his buddies to spread the word about his restaurant. With the combination of his dedication and good friends, Maria’s soon experienced a steady flow of customers. His cooking was superb and the dishes looked beautiful. Maria also helped out while the baby was asleep in the back. George & Maria worked flawlessly as a team.
George & Maria were very much in love. This attracted the customers into the restaurant. George’s former band volunteered to play on Friday and Saturday nights. As a result, the weekends experienced a bigger customer flow. The restaurant soon became a hangout for old friends. George & Maria’s felt very happy that they can share their food with their friends and family.
The restaurant today is still a hotspot. It has grown into a comfortable family restaurant. George & Maria’s children also work at the restaurant. The kids trained in the restaurant from a young age as George did under his uncle. George & Maria hope that their children will someday takeover the responsibilities of the business. Although both George & Maria sacrificed their dreams and independence, they lived a very happy life together. Maria’s Mexicatessen is a great success story that flourished out of two people in love.
